Adult Mental Health Awareness
We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. Mental ‘ill-health’ can strike at any time and can affect those from all walks of life.
But would you know how to help?
Although things are improving, stigma still exists around mental ‘ill-health’. As a society, we don’t tend to know how to take care of our mental health like we do our physical health. This means that people may not know how to support a friend, family member or colleague experiencing a mental health issue, or where to go for support with their own mental health.
Attend a Mental Health Training Course
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course that teaches people how to identify, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.
We won’t teach you to be a therapist, but we will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.
Over our adult mental health training courses, you’ll also learn to recognise warning signs of mental ‘ill-health’, while developing the skills and confidence to approach and support someone. All this, while keeping your health and the health of others safe.
You’ll also learn how to empower someone to access the support they might need for recovery or successful management of symptoms. This could include self-help books or websites, accessing therapy services through their GP, their school or place of work, online self-referral, support groups, and more.
What’s more, you’ll gain an understanding of how to support positive wellbeing and tackle the stigma around adult mental health in the world around you.
Our Adult MHFA Two Day course qualifies you as a Mental Health First Aider.
MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AIDERS HAVE:
- An ‘in-depth’ understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
- Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
- Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
- Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
- Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix

WOULD YOU KNOW HOW TO HELP?
We’re aware of the challenges a university environment can bring to staff and student mental health alike. Moving away from support networks for the first time, academic pressure, financial worries, rising debt and the uncertainty of the graduate job market can all trigger mental ‘ill-health’ or worsen existing mental health issues in students. Long working hours, a culture of overwork, isolation, and increasing pressures from league tables means that stress and burnout is common from PhD students to vice-chancellors.
- 78% of students reported experiencing mental health issues in a given year – but less than half had sought support
- 66% of academics with mental health issues say their ‘ill-health’ is directly related to work
- MHFA CHAMPIONS
Our intensive Higher Education mental health awareness and skills course was created in consultation with leading student mental health charity Student Minds. It was piloted in 16 universities and evaluated by the University of Chester.
This one day course qualifies people as Higher Education MHFA Champions, giving them:
A deeper understanding of the issues that relate to student and staff mental health
Skills to spot early signs of mental ‘ill-health’
Confidence to signpost someone to support – whether that’s through self-help resources, university counselling services, the NHS, or a mix
Knowledge and confidence to advocate for mental health awareness
